Gabriel Heinze’s Roma debut
Gaby made his debut for AS Roma last night in a friendly against Vasas SC. Gaby played the first half and was given good reviews by the Italian media, especially for his leadership on the pitch and communication with his new teammates. Roma won the match 1-0.

Q: You have great experience, having played with great clubs and the national team. What made you come to Rome?
In the past I had the good fortune to play for great clubs. Now I was offered this new challenge to play for one of the best clubs in one of the best leagues.
Q: What convinced you to come here and for what purpose?
There was no need, I was already convinced. I spoke with the coach of the project, and it was easy to say yes to Roma.
Q: Roma has so far focused on young people, you’re the exception of the market. What do you think of these young players, especially your comrade Lamela?
They are very good young players. Lamela is extraordinary and very hungry for victory, and we need to trust that we are more experienced and we have to help him. The important thing is that the group is united.
Q: Have you already talked with the coach and his companions?
I arrived two days ago, but I like the project. With Luis Enrique I have just talked about my preparation, and now I want to do my best because the project can be realised.
Q: Totti is in his twentieth season: he more than anyone else can help you with some guidance…
We have not spoken, but there is time.
Q: Do you prefer to play centre-back or full-back? Would you like to play a pairing in Argentina with Burdisso?
I have no preference, I adapt to what the coach asks me. Obviously I’d like to play in a pairing from Argentina, but it is more important to win.
Q: Do you already know the training methods of Luis Enrique? What ideas have you done today?
No, I did not know his methods. But they are at his disposal.
Q: Have you ever crossed Burdisso in your career? You have a contract with automatic renewal on your 25th appearance, is this your aim?
My father is German and my mother has Italian origins, Sicily to be exact. Burdisso I played with in the national team and we often met in retreat. The contract is not a wager, only a guarantee to continue. But now I think only of being helpful to the cause, I have not thought much about the 25 appearances.
Q: You chose the number 5 shirt which was Mexes’; is it significant?
No, it is a number which has had great players, but has no special meaning for me.
Q: How were you welcomed? Have you seen Rome and the city and the passion of the fans?
They welcomed me very well, everyone. I was in Rome to play when I was at Manchester United and Roma fans are known throughout the world for their passion.

Gaby has flown out to join AS Roma’s pre-season and tonight joined his new comrades for dinner. He will be presented officially at a press conference tomorrow.

Gaby has completed and passed his medical and is now ready to officially sign the contract to make him an AS Roma player.

Gabriel Heinze landed in Rome’s airport about 2.10 local time. He was approached by journalists but merely told them : “no habla” (“I will not talk”) before leaving the airport, accompanied by his brother, and departing in a taxi. Heinze seemed happy and eager to join up with his new club, who he should sign a contract with tomorrow after completely a medical.
Presumably, Gaby is now staying in a hotel before finding a place to live and his wife and children should fly out to join him later.
